Stories from the world of RC car racing

The first round of the SEQ Interclub is now just days away (March 8-9) as South-East Queensland on-road racers prepare for the first of our major events for the year.
Entries are still being received and entry forms can can be downloaded from the Interclub Page (see menu above) or from www.wynnumrc.com/interclub.html . You can also enter on-line at www.wynnumrc.com
Now for the predictions……
GP – Gas Tourer: Always hard to know in this class – with lots of different drivers bringing their A game at the first event of the year. That said, the fast guys from 2007 will be near the front again – so look for Peter Giblin, Graham Lloyd-Jones, John Taynton etc. My tip though – the one and only Bob Vardy. Go Bob!
GP – Pro Tourer: Nobody could seriously tip against Jason Dorn in this class at Bayside – could they? If he is there, he will be the man to beat – without question. Could the mighty Tak Woo make an appearance? Can Peter Giblin topple the young gun? How much horsepower is too much? These and many more questions to be answered this weekend…
EP – 540: A new year, and hopefully some new faces in this class. Last year’s front-runner Johnny Hyde has moved on to Stock full-time (where he’ll be one of the fav’s), so it remains to be seen who will step into those shoes. Some of the Sunny Coast young guns who have moved to stock might run 540 on the Saturday – and so Nic Orr for example will be tough to beat.
EP – 19T: Could be interesting – with likely only a few of the regular Mod guys running 19T. Look for Johnny Hyde, Martin Nichol, Jason Wakefield, Chris Shevelling, or for my money, Tim Weier to take the win.
EP – Stock: This class should be a battle royale between the experience and smooth skills of Keith Mackrill, and the pace and persistence of current Queensland Champ Chris “The Shevinator” Shevelling. Should be really great to watch. Close by also I’d expect Johnny Hyde, Jason Wakefield, Andrew Clough, Bob Vardy and a host of others.
EP – Modified: A gun field in this class. How about Anthony Atack, John Perkins, Leonard Lai, Peter Dooley, Andrew Shapland, Drew Crawley, Grant McDonald, Scott Kirchner for starters? Of course Anthony will start favourite, but Scott Kirchner is coming on strong in his prep for the off-road Nationals, and Shaps will be tough. I’m picking those three for the podium. The real battle however will be fought out between Peter Dooley and myself – as we battle for bragging rights that are gonna have to last a long, long time before either of us get to race in Queensland again…. I’ll also be watching Chris Hyde closely – his move from 540 Qld Champ in ’07 to Modified might take a while to pay dividents – but he is definitely talented.
Club-wise, it’s hard to see anybody beating the big Sunshine Coast team – particularly with 2007 champs Logan being conspicuous by their small numbers on the interim entry list. Time will tell.
It should be a super weekend. Track is in great shape, the best guys are gathering, and the atmosphere should be friendly, but competitive. I’m looking forward to it. How ’bout you?

Thinking of racing 19t on Saturday with a 13.5SS but possibly could race Nitro.
On Sunday it will be stock for me with a 13.5EX.
Certainly use a LRP 5300 LIPO, and a CORE 3250 on Saturday but Scott will use the LRP on Sunday so I’m hoping my new CORE 5000 packs will be here before then, they are a great fit in the Mi3.
Really looking forward to the event and some good racing – the Bayside track is so good now with the resurface – plenty of grip and not hard on tyres.

The record has been broken – officially – well over a hundred entries for the Interclub -great to see and certainly justifies all the trouble and heart ache getting it all to happen.
A great days racing today in all three classes – couldn’t have been better. Especially for me in 19t to be able to have such great racing all day was fantastic – thanks to all teh guys for a fair, but hard days racing – can’t remember when I enjoyed a day so much

    My weekend in summary.
Went to the old boys bash at Brendale on Friday night just for long enough to say I was there. Looked like they were having a good time.
Saturday raced the Schuie in the Super STock / 19t class using a 13.5 brushless (sintered rotor ). Qualified and finished 4th. The Mi3 was faultlless all day.
Sunday raced the Serpent in stock using a Novak EX13.5 running 35.4 mm per rev. Ran 4 heats and 3 finals didn’t finish 1 heat due to a front cvd pin.
    Qualified 4th and finished 3rd.
    My LIPO experience.
Saturday for 3 heats and 3 finals I used one battery all day – a 5300 LRP.
Sunday for 4 heats and 3 finals I used one battery all day – a 3250 CORE.
I learned that one battery is possible but teh bigger capacity battery was more comfortable in getting the recharge done because at the higher amps it puts the 1600 odd mah required back in quicker.
I think I will go with 2 packs in future and for ease of fitting and being up to weight I will use 2 packs identical and the same weight.
It’s confirmed me as a brushless / LIPo / Schuie man.

I’m with you there Heavy. At least you can be a Schuie man now Scott will not be stealing it off you for a while. Great racing on the weekend mate.
All the best for Scott on your new journey.
