Now for the predictions……
GP – Gas Tourer: Always hard to know in this class – with lots of different drivers bringing their A game at the first event of the year. That said, the fast guys from 2007 will be near the front again – so look for Peter Giblin, Graham Lloyd-Jones, John Taynton etc. My tip though – the one and only Bob Vardy. Go Bob!
GP – Pro Tourer: Nobody could seriously tip against Jason Dorn in this class at Bayside – could they? If he is there, he will be the man to beat – without question. Could the mighty Tak Woo make an appearance? Can Peter Giblin topple the young gun? How much horsepower is too much? These and many more questions to be answered this weekend…
EP – 540: A new year, and hopefully some new faces in this class. Last year’s front-runner Johnny Hyde has moved on to Stock full-time (where he’ll be one of the fav’s), so it remains to be seen who will step into those shoes. Some of the Sunny Coast young guns who have moved to stock might run 540 on the Saturday – and so Nic Orr for example will be tough to beat.
EP – 19T: Could be interesting – with likely only a few of the regular Mod guys running 19T. Look for Johnny Hyde, Martin Nichol, Jason Wakefield, Chris Shevelling, or for my money, Tim Weier to take the win.
EP – Stock: This class should be a battle royale between the experience and smooth skills of Keith Mackrill, and the pace and persistence of current Queensland Champ Chris “The Shevinator” Shevelling. Should be really great to watch. Close by also I’d expect Johnny Hyde, Jason Wakefield, Andrew Clough, Bob Vardy and a host of others.
EP – Modified: A gun field in this class. How about Anthony Atack, John Perkins, Leonard Lai, Peter Dooley, Andrew Shapland, Drew Crawley, Grant McDonald, Scott Kirchner for starters? Of course Anthony will start favourite, but Scott Kirchner is coming on strong in his prep for the off-road Nationals, and Shaps will be tough. I’m picking those three for the podium. The real battle however will be fought out between Peter Dooley and myself – as we battle for bragging rights that are gonna have to last a long, long time before either of us get to race in Queensland again…. I’ll also be watching Chris Hyde closely – his move from 540 Qld Champ in ’07 to Modified might take a while to pay dividents – but he is definitely talented.
Club-wise, it’s hard to see anybody beating the big Sunshine Coast team – particularly with 2007 champs Logan being conspicuous by their small numbers on the interim entry list. Time will tell.
It should be a super weekend. Track is in great shape, the best guys are gathering, and the atmosphere should be friendly, but competitive. I’m looking forward to it. How ’bout you?
