2010

With a new year hard upon us I’ve been thinking about what the year might hold for us all. Just putting some thoughts down and you are free to comment as long as the usual that applies to this blog is observed – no abuse and no foul language, let’s be contructive on the assumption the the decision makers of our sport will read this blog. Of course as usual my comments have a EP bias as that’s where I race.
F1
There is no doubt that this long standing but until recently idle class is back with a vengance around SEQ. Those of us that race them – predominantly on a Wed night at Logan have formulated a set of rules to take us through 2010, lets hope other clubs that race the F1 use the same rules – uniformity would be good.
There is talk about including F1 in the Interclubs, but frankly driving them without traction compound is very unpleasant and unsatisfactory and while we have clubs in the Interclub that don’t allow traction compound it’s probably a fairly unattractive proposition. Plus it’s mainly the domain of one club so far with another club about to start with some cars and the Interclub has always been based on classes that are run everywhere.
I think the proposed F1 series for 2010 would be the best way to have big meets for these cars rather than at the Interclubs. It is planned to run a drivers pointscore for them over the series and also a teams (2 per team) pointscore using the same system for points as the full size F1.
Interclubs
Personally I think that the mix of classes is about right – whether we have 3 or 4 rounds is a question – personally I think 3 is enough when you consider all the other big events through the year.
Super Stock
One of the indisputable truths is that we just don’t have enough rc drivers in South East Qld to run extra classes. If you run Super Stock at club level either stock or mod (or both) suffer. We really don’t have enough EP drivers to run three classes (540 stock and mod) and when you make into 4 classes without any extra people it’s simply waters the other classes down. At the Interclubs it’s fine cause it’s on a different day to both Stock and Mod. And also at Qld Title level it’s, up to now, been on a different day the those classes as well.
Club Racing
Logan, Bayside and Sunny Coast all look pretty strong in EP terms and of recent weeks GP has been making a strong comeback at Bayside after a small slump. GP at Logan is very weak. GP at Brendale continues to be their strength. If the various club heirachy can get together and work out a calendar for 2010 that avoids major clashes and makes best use of the available weekends we’ll all be better off.

    On the super stock subject most can go from stock to super stock with minor adjustment’s to there set ups and driving style.But going from stock to mod is alot harder to get it down pat.I think that the few mod guys need to sit down or even at a club meet show others how its all done as i do with the stock guys im for ever taking the time to work on others cars to make them handle better as a lack of knowledge on setups is a killer for most.There are a hand full of stock guys that could not get it together in the way of setups and how to prep tyre before a race what heat to put in them etc i have showed them how to do things that work for me and most improve half to a full lap ahead of there previous race…I had one lad at meakin the other night i showed him how to set up his car and after the races he was happy as then he said to me that why cant the mod guys help like i do.He said they seem to be up themselves and they seem not to be approachable and want to help…When some one tries a new class and fail at it they step back to the lower class as”I have done not from cant drive it was maintenance”like with my close friend Brad Palmer who was hating stock but i helped him in stock rather then see him going back to 540 now he is loving it. so maybe the mod guys can help other racer even if they to honest are hopeless but they deserve the chance of having the knowledge of the top drives in that classes”ie 540 stock and mod. i dont want to upset anyone as i can ask the mod guys for help and there happy to its only what i have heard and been told

    Clinton it is admirable that you’re willing to help out less experienced drivers. Everybody should do the same.
    I don’t know anyone who’s running mod who wouldn’t be happy to help another driver if asked. Almost universally the mod drivers want more people to run modified, and for the class to be more competitive and are only too happy to help. All it takes is a question or request and they’d be ready.
    I know I’ve spent plenty of time at the track helping guys work out there cars, and I’ve seen other mod guys doing likewise.
    Again, all it takes is for someone to ask for some ideas and all the mod guys would be there ready to assist.

    I would have to disargee with you clinton, I have moved to mod just cause I like the speed, and so far I have had great help from most of the mod guys, both Leonard and Anthony have taken time to help me with my setup, and improved the handling of the car greatly, scotty G also took the time to setup my car for me at the Gold Coast, with mixed results 😆 , Scotty and your wacked out shock setup..
    It is great to get help from all of the quick guys, especially for guys like me who can’t get to a race meet every other week to try different setups as such, when we travel 5hrs to race 20min we want the car to perform the best and guys like you, Anthony, Leonard and Beggys to name a fewhelp us to enjoy the day more rather than running around chasing setups.

    i’m more than happy to help people with questions, look at their car, etc. all you have to do is ask. that goes for all racers, regardless of what class or car you’re running.
    quite often i don’t have time to wander around the pits as i tend to put a lot of effort into car preparation and playing around with stuff trying to learn… however i’m always able to talk, answer questions, whatever while i’m wrenching and i’m almost always able to make the time to look over someone’s car if they come to me with it.

    This year, I think I raced in nearly every on road class possible, and I must say, I did receive alot of help and advice in all classes. I feel in general , most racers are only too willing to help. Thank you to all who helped through out 2009. Look forward to 2010. With a growing F-1 field, next year should be a blast. 😆 😆

    What about the merits of the recent revival of F1… Some may say that this too will break up current classes for the sake of another. I’ve always been in favour with consolidating classes to maximise the challenge and talent to get to the “A”. But I do have a soft spot for F1’s. They compliment Touring car racing so well. Like Off-Road racing does for On-Road, F1 provides great opportunities to:
    • Speed up your reaction times.
    • Have really close racing.
    • Can take a beating with few breakages.
    • And are relatively cheap to run.
    I hope F1 stays for the reasons listed above, and would encourage those that have not yet tried it to give it a go. You’ll have a blast in this form of racing, especially with those 540 motors. Arh, the good old days of 540 F1 Racing…
    Which brings me to another point of interest… One of the great events (IMO) of the past was the Gold Coast 540 Off-Road Challenge back in the late 90’s. This was a period of time when RC was dominated with Off-Road racing. It was an end of Year event which brought everyone together in RC Racing around SEQ. It was presents as a relaxed non-serious event. Everyone that entered the competition “had” to run a 540 johno. We had all the regular Mod, Club Spec and the 540 guys all racing. It was a great day of banter and sledging and a great way to wind the year up. Not sure of the practicality of doing it today though with the brushless motors not being as cheap as the old 540’s ($15). But it would still be good to try…
