Stories from the world of RC car racing

We are just about to head trackside for finals day at the 2009 AARCMCC EP Onroad Nationals.  There’s a lot to look forward to today as we finish qualifying and then crown four new Australian champs.
Predictions?  Hot racing. Hot weather. (click through for more)
Mod will be a battle between Ari, Ryan and maybe Simon. Outside (but real) chances include Atack, Zarb (coming on strong) and Laughlin.
Superstock will be between Zarb, Cribbin, Weier, Broadstock and Silva. hard to go past Zarb though, he’s been impressive.
Stock?  Could go anywhere. Darren Laughlin, Peter Beckett, Rodney Maslovski, Harrison Hawke.  At this stage I’d say it will be a battle between Beckett and Laughlin, with the queenslander’s big round 4 run pushing him slightly into favouritism.
12th scale it’s still hard to see Hazell being beaten, but both Caretti and Lee are improving quickly, so it’s not quite a done deal.
Results? We’ll be trying to upload them as the day goes on including last night’s Round 4 of quali. Go here:  http://www.actionrc.com.au/downloads/nats09results/Final_Index.html
Round five kicks off 9am, should be done about 11.30.  Round six should be finished around 1pm, followed by finals.
Stay tuned for news (click through by hitting the header, updates will be posted as comments).
cheers
scott

It is stiinking hot, hot dusty wind, track conditions getting ugly. Qual just finished, I’ll try and track down some top 10 / A finalists shortly. I do know that in mod Ari is TQ, but Ryan was awesome in the last qualifier when conditions were really nasty. More soon

A lot of cars went loose in the last round of qualifying, with very tough conditions. Ari was a little loose for the first time all weekend, Simon continued his tightrope walk and made it stick, but the car looked uncomfortable. Andy Cooke was fast early but appeared to overheat tyres. Ryan Maker on the other hand, looked awesome. If conditions stay the same, he will be a very serious threat from the front row of the grid. The battle between the control of Bakla and Maker, and the raw aggression and unbelievable car control of Nicholson will be something to see.
Superstock, Zarb looks to have everything he needs to take the win after a dominant qualifying performance.
Stock should be a good battle between Laughlin and Beckett – with Beckett having been dealing with traffic all weekend. Hawke has come on strong late as well and should not be discounted.
12th you have to say will be Hazell unless something really weird happens.
I haven’t been keeping tabs on the demo classes, but I think Andy Cooke has topped the Mini charts, will Brisbane bike guru Shaun Caufield has I think been the quickest in the Venom bikes. For some strange reason there is a second mini class (long political story I choose not to get involved in), but I don’t know who’s winning that.

sorry about missing results sheet for round 4, I’m not sure where it’s gone, and race control are a little busy right now sorting finals. We’ll get the full results up later once finals are done.

    A1 done (at last).
12th: Hazell by a mile, from Caretti.
Stock: Laughlin comfortably – very spread out race after messy first lap.
Superstock: Damien Zarb from Grant Mount, Tim Weier third, Ben Cribbin, Corey Broadstock (back from the dead after a horror first lap)
Mod: Ari, Ryan Maker, Jake Zarb, Tim Lee, Simon Nicholson, Troy Laughlin, Anthony Atack. Ari and Ryan checked out and drove a great nose to tail race – Ari controlling it comfortably despite Ryan’s close attention. Carnage behind spread the field with Nicholson coming from well back to threaten. The title defense looks in trouble with Simon have to wrestle his car while Ari and Ryan look much more comfortable.
Sorry for lake of details above, 90 minutes in the sun taking photos and I’m just about ready for hospital. Full results later.

Qld Bike legend Shaun Caufield won the Venom 8th Bike Demo.
Andy Cooke won the mini class from Ray Wood.
Just drank from my water bottle that’s been sitting on the table in the shade. Burnt my lips. Hot, sticky, windy, dusty. Crap weather! I’m so looking forward to landing back home in launceston tommorrow where the temp today is a beautiful 18 degrees!

    Round 2 done.
12th: Kyle Hazell is the new Aussie Champ with a dominant display.
Stock: Harrison Hawke took the win to send it to a decider.
Superstock: Ben Cribbin beat home Damien Zarb to send it to a decider.
Mod: Ari Bakla is the new Australian Champ. Maker copped a rough start with Nicholson getting into him in turn one. Ryan closed on Bakla over about 2 minutes and made an attempted pass reminiscent of Reinhard v Hara at last year’s Worlds – both taking to the paint and kerb as maker squeeze on the inside. Exiting the corner though, he found the dust and spun – hitting the barrier and breaking his steering. It was the defining moment of the weekend in the mod class – Ari going on to a race and championship win. Nicholson got the better of a great stoush with Troy Laughlin, Anthony Atack 5th.
    Round three finals starting now.

Scott.. Scent of a wood fired home, (not bushfires)… 15Kw of energy wasting cooling the home and filtering the pool, (instead of charging my LiPos) a few good logs on a wood fire of an evening, wearing some clothing and eating fine foods.. man it’s SOOO tempting.
Anyway.. congrats to Ari, and well done AA… looking forward to final results.
and good job to ActionRC.. How’d “Heavy” do?

Just uploading the full and final results now.
Feeling completely exhausted, like I cooked my insides while sitting on the 60 deg tarmac for 3 hours taking finals photos…but I got the shots of Ryan’s attempted pass on Ari….you can see them in Racing Lines soon.
More reflections later when I’ve rested a while.
by the way, heavy finished 4th in the B final in stock – so 14th out of about 40 entries. impressive performance I reckon!
