Stories from the world of RC car racing

The 2009 Venom AARCMCC Nationals are underway, with official practice starting this morning.
Couple of links before the news. Firstly, the rctech discussion thread on the nats is here.  Secondly, live timing at slyfox if/when it’s up and running is here.
Trackside, everything is pretty well up and running. Pits are busy, but not packed, track is in excellent condition and the buzz is building.
Main issue at the moment is that it’s hot, hot, hot.  Tyres are strained, motors are strained, batteries are strained.  Tasmanians are wilting.
Track is a nice layout with lots of fast corners, and a little slow stuff.  Practice so far is not by class, so it’s a bit of a lottery in terms of traffic.
Facilities are good, huge tent to hold all the drivers, portable flood lights ready for night racing, good high driver’s stand.  All the ingredients are here for an excellent nats.
Our cars are working pretty well, we’re focussed at this point on making them look after the tyres.  Getting five minutes from a set of tyres is proving difficult (in terms of tyres overheating mid-way through the run) so tyre life will be critical.
More later!

Day one is in the bag. We’re finally back at the hotel to rest and recover after a hot day trackside.
Tonight we headed back to the track to run under lights, with a full round of qualifying to be run after dark on saturday night. The track is always different under lights, and tonight was no different. The temporary lighting is adequate, but not great, with a few dark spots. I’ll be searching for some white stickers to bring a bit of visibility to my red & gunmetal paint job in the far corners of the track.
Who was fast today? In mod, no surprise to see Simon Nicholson & Ari Bakla cracking out fast times, but behind them is a very tight group, including the South Aussies, the queenslanders and a host of NSW drivers. No sign of Ryan Maker today, but I imagine he’ll be here tomorrow.
In other classes its a little difficult to say, but certainly the queensland guys were all going well today, and mostly finish the day happy with their cars.
The Nats facility is taking shape, with a superb pit area under canvas, temporary lighting, large dedicated officials tent and plenty more. The host club are working hard to put on a good nats.
Tomorrow, more practice, including a couple of rounds of timed practice by heats, and we should get a clear picture of how things are shaping up for the weekend.
The Mi4’s are going well, Heavy has his working nicely in Stock, and both Anthony and I are happy with the state of our cars heading into day two of practice. We found some useful setup ideas this afternoon that both improved performance and helped a lot with tyre performance over a full five minute run.
That’s it for today! Back tommorrow for more action.
    cheers

Thanks for the posts Heavy and for comments Scott. AA seemed to was be much happier with the Schumacher last time I saw him on track. Hope everything comes together and pans out for the best including younger Corey, chase and the gang… So tempting to throw a back pack in the car and drive down for the weekend… Anyways keep up the posts, we are barracking for our racing buddies and another season of racing for Luke and we might get to join you all as well.
PS: Its a stinker in Brizzy too.
