Stories from the world of RC car racing

Many racers around SEQ appreciate the trackside support with parts and info that we give to Schumacher drivers – think we can do the same with F1 ? Watch this space we will be making some announcements soon and you won’t want to miss them.
Fancy a F1 that can use Pan car tyres (same as we are using now on Corally cars) or can effortlessly switch to a different type wheel or even Tamiya tyres or rubbers. Fancy a car that can take any type battery, stick, Lipo, saddle either up the centre or across. Fancy a car with easy adjustment of front caster and camber. Fancy a car that is competitive in open F1. Fancy a car that will not break the bank. Fancy a car with spare parts trackside.
And yes – it will take a brushless motor. Start saving.
Keep in touch we will reveal plans soon.
EDIT
here’s a link to the web store where you can check detail and prices etc (don’t forget to add about $50 for freight to Australia)- shop won’t officially be open till 1.1.10

Not the 3 racing 109 – that would have been a reasonable choice for a cheap starter type car – but can’t take Pan car tyres without a lot of modification, and can only take the battery one way. Not from Asia at all actually.

You do have to pay a bit for quality but I hope it will be very reasonably priced
    Adrian
Maybe not as fancy as a Corally or AGR just quicker 😆 😆 😆

By the way – if anyone out there wants a competitive F1 cheap – let me know – I’ve got a 1st generation F1 in great condition and 2 more as spares plus some other new spares that I’m prepared to part with very reasonably.
This is still a very competitive car as well.

    Motor rule for F1
Proposal being voted on amongst F1 drivers at the moment is as follows
    *540 or Hybrid (only a Johnson 540 arm…no Sport Tuned/Mabuchi arms)
    *21.5T Brushless
    *27T Stock
    *17.5T Brushless

I will vote for anything that runs brushless. Dont care if its 21.5,17.5,10.5,7.5 lets keep with the times and go with brushless.

Agree, Big Mac there has to be a brushless motor but there also has to be a brushed as some of the cars a brushless won’t fit – that’s why we are saying stock or 17.5.

Fair enough Heavy. Lets go motors of the self not hybrids. I also think one class with motors upto 17.5 or 27t with the possability of running a beginer class but there might not be the numbers to do it right. Lets get one big class going then move to two classes when the numbers are good. Maybe we all step back to 21.5,540 class for 12 months. Just a thought.

Love your work Big Mac, we have been down this road, but guess what, the vote never happened apparantly. I too like the thought of brushless, find a motor and stick to it, before this class goes down the same road as the minis.
You know its not that diffcult, just vote on it and stick to it, but make sure you record it, and then have every member sign off on it, then it may work lol.
But the F1s are great, one day i might try them as well, need to see some consistancy, so hopefully heavy can get in their and sort it out, then yep i will buy one off heavy and start racing.

While we were voting on a motor others went a bit further – this is what is being proposed at the moment
    FORCDA
Formula 1 Radio Controlled Drivers Association
    Proposed 2010 F1 Rules.
    Motor Classes.
Division 1 a) Motors may be up to & including 17.5 Brushless & 27T Brushed.
    b) Brushless, oversize rotors are not permitted. Motors must be approved for Stock Touring car racing & rules will mirror ORRCA guidelines.
    c) Brushed, Hybrid motors are permitted & the onus is on the Driver to identify the armature is a 27T single to the Race Directors satisfaction or it will not be permitted for use. i.e. Tamiya Sport Tuned armatures are not permitted.
Bearings are permitted & the use of after-market Brush Hoods & Brushes is permitted.
Division 2 a) Motors may be up to & including 21.5 Brushless & Grey Can Johnson 540 motors only.
A weight penalty may be imposed to maintain parity if it is found to be necessary. This will only be done after consultation with Division 2 drivers & a minimum 30 days notice will be given if a weight penalty is to be imposed.
Where numbers permit, the two Divisions will run as separate classes. Combining of the Divisions will be at the Race Directors discretion.
Batteries. All LiPo’s must be hard case. NiMh and Nicd are allowed. There is no capacity limit at present but may be introduced if deemed necessary.
Chassis. Any brand of Formula 1 chassis is allowed as long as the body resembles a Formula 1 car. The chassis must be RWD only and 1/10th scale.
Tyres. Tyres are “free choice” the use of traction compound is permitted where the host Club/Track permits.
Weight. Minimum required weight is 1000 grams.

heavy Its funny how we now have a FORCDA and a proposed set of rules with little to no input from the drivers. Back to basics time  So who is the president of FORCDA ❓ Sounds like the FIA/FOTA battle all over 🙂

Oh yea – it’s F1 – there must be some controversy. Even talking about beginners shows how far from the real F1 we really are 😆 😆 😆
It’s unfortunate that your proposal and Martins crossed over – also I had a copy of teh past rule set with me on Sunday so at the least we all arrived at a place where we were acknowledging teh need to get something formal happening.
I’ve responded to the FORCDA (where did that horrible name come from) proposal this morning on the reply to all email.

    Hello All,
I have only raced a couple of times. The most enjoyable of these races was at Toowoomba where there was a definite rule set for motors. I have not raced again for the simple reason that every time I asked I got a diferent answer as to what motor was going to be run. I have also turned up to race with a motor fitted that I was told everyone would be running only to find out that some were running faster motors.
I admit that am not the best driver going around, but it would be nice to be able to turn up to race knowing that you at least had the same equipment as everyone else and that only setup and driver skills made a difference.
I will now step down from my soap box…….. 🙄

    Hi Steve,
I agree with you, but it does sound like there is going to be a attempt to standardise the rules. I also agree with Big Mac, at this stage while we are trying to grow the class, we should try to use simpler motors such as the brushless variety, i think that way it can better be controlled. Hybrid look like they go ok, but i think it may always be debated at what is actually in the motor on any given day.
I really liked racing the F1’s and i am sitting waiting to come back, but will only do it when i know i am coming down and racing everyone on a level playing field, where the only thing you need to do is drive. ( unfortunately for me, it will still mean the Bob’s and Martins will still be ahead of me) hehehehehe.
From outside it looks like there are some teething issues, but if we can get it right, i can see this class being big next year.

chassis or even 3X3 cells (saddle pack).

Debut of the 2010 AGR last night was awesome.Put in a Reedy Rockstar(same as Martin and Brad)just got the electrics in and 2 laps practice before the racing started….car felt pretty dialled straight away…came 4th in the first heat,2nd heat(after Adrian did a few tweaks) car went even better, but a little bit on the edge..came 2nd(1st F1)3rd heat Adrian tweaked it a bit more and the car stared to feel really good..Came 2nd(1st F1) 23laps 15.4sec lap.The final was awesome…the car felt planted and just pulled away from the other F1s..A big thanks go to Adrian for building a great car…his is still being built!!
Bring on the Gold Coast next Sunday…all F1 guys should try to make it.
PS the motor rule limiting to stock worked very well…racing was a whole lot closer..even in the second heat(I think there were 11 Fis and 2 12th scale)

A little info for anyone who might try a 21.5 in F1.
    Logan…
In the end we found that anywhere between 80mm – 84mm roll out worked really well. This was with 5 deg timing on the motor and no turbo functions on the ESC’s. Also ran around 20% drag brake. That felt like a good starting point and didn’t end up changing it all nite. One other thing is tighten the diff up…you dont need much if any slip. To much and it is just to slow off the line and out of the turns.
Otherwise it seems like a really good motor choice if you are going brushless in your F1 and dont need the extra power of the 17.5
    Cheers

Looks like I will be running a AGR this year.
Adrian has now decided to offer 3 basic models
    Clubman
    Racer
    Championship
I think is what they will be called.
I will be running the Clubman, Adrian the Racer and Bob the Championship model. The prices of each will reflect the level of equipment offered.
The cars are all upgradeable to the championship model with the addition of go fast goodies and some bling. Looking forward to getting mine
