For father’s day this year, my kids gave me an F1 inspired slot car set. We’ve set it up in the spare room, where we retreat most days for some Ferrari vs McClaren action on our 5.9 metre long race track. I’d particularly like to see real-world F1 tracks incorporating a loop-the-loop and wall climb. Awesome!
I’ve been wanting for years to get another slot car track (having sold my own AFX/Aurora set as a teenager to fund the purchase of my first ESC!) and waiting until my kids were old enough that we could do it together. Already I’m finishing a distant second in some of our races.
My own model-car racing addiction began with lounge-room slot-car tournaments in my own childhood with the four boys, dad and occasionally mum all participating. I fondly remember one night during an extended electricity black-out, Dad came up with the brilliant idea of a slot car race meeting. Only one thing missing…..electricity! Ever resourceful, heavy drove the car up next to the lounge room window – and powered the slot car set via jumper leads from the car battery. Slot car racing by candle-light is about as good as it gets.
How about you? Any good slot car racing stories to tell? Or can you identify the beginnings of your r/c addiction?
