Stories from the world of RC car racing

On my way up the coast today for the Qld Super Stock Titles I called in at Boondal for a trip down memory lane. Gee it hasn’t changed a bit since I was there in 1986. The Boondal offroad track that is. STill the old crushed granite surface, still no drivers stand, still teh old form spectators seats to stand on to drive from. STill a very pleasant place amonst the trees there. If I was retired I reckon it would be on my agenda to spend the day there every Wednesday with a couple of old Offroad cars and a bar b q and a cuppa – what a way to spend a day.

Had the chance to call in again at Boondal briefly SUNDAY morning and watch the boys playing with some old cars. The only offroad car I had with me was a 1/8th electric Caster. Did a few awesome laps with that before the wheel fell off and I had no spare nuts with me – but it was great.

I remember when I was a little person (smaller then what I am now!) running at Lawnton and Chervellum (on the Sunny Coast) Must have been late 80’s early 90’s. Raced the Frog/Grasshopper/Hornet/Fox/Falcon. Whee you used to pop the bonnet and charge your batteries from the car battery! Used sheep counts to count the laps with the help of coloured electrical tape on the aerial.
Lawnton I had to stand on a tree stump to see the track! Always racing against adults (me being 12 or so)

Fast forward on this post to 2013. Since I posted above I have had the chance to visit Boondall a reasonable number of times – Saturday mornings is when the Vintage action happens, not racing as such, ie no lap counters, no transponders, no organised races, just a lot of laughs between vintage mates (there are some younger people there as well)and a chance to drive the valued old girls on a track originally made for them – no 1/8th scale jumps – but there is a drivers stand there these days.
Some of the guys have a real collection of pristine yesterday models and they usually bring along a couple for the rest of us to ogle, these are shelfers but they bring some runners as well. I love it best when the word goes up “lets run the Hotshots “.
I’ll be out there this Saturday 8th June 2013
