At the NWRCCC “Big Boyz Toys” event in Northern Tasmania the Action R/C lead driver scored an impressive 2 lap win in the hotly contested open buggy class. Driving an LRP buggy Scott was pressed strongly till the 4 minute mark but had opened out to a 2 lap lead by the 10 minute mark which he held to finish of the final (20 minutes).

The North West R/c Car Club (Tasmania) had their opening meeting for the year today, supported by local hobby store Big Boys Toys. The race took place at the new home of the club, at Latrobe Speedway. The new track is still a little while away, so the boys put together a great little grass track with a variety of obstacles, including a big table top, smaller jump, plough discs, slippery conveyor belt strip, and corrugated iron section. The layout was non stop, and challenging – but definitely fun.
Matt Hodgets was the class of the field in Truggy, winning most of the qualifiers and going on to a dominant win in the 20 minute A final. Scotty Wilkes was probably the nearest challenger today, but struck clutch problems forcing him out before the final.
Monster Truck was a big class today – split into 8th and 10th scale. The 10th scale field was small, and dominanted by Kelvin in the 12th scale (ironically) Hobao mini-truggy, ahead of Shaun Johnson’s Traxxas. The big bangers class for 8th scale monster trucks was all action – sorry I can’t recall the result at the end!
The buggy class provided some awesome racing. At the front Scott Guyatt (LRP) and Tim Parsons (Mugen) went at it all day – seperated by just a few metres for most of the four qualifiers. The 20 minute A final started much as qualifying had gone – with Guyatt and Parsons going at it before Tim suffered the first of many flame-outs, putting paid to his final. Scott went on to win, with Sam Wells (Hyper) and Mark Rayner (XRay) filling the podium.
I had a great day. I raced close and clean with Tim pretty much all day, with nothing to pick between our cars. It was nice to finally win my first nitro buggy race, and to run solidly throughout the 20 minute final was good. The LRP S8 BX performed flawlessly all day, as did the LRP ZR.21X engine. I hope all my buggy races go as well in terms of reliability as this one. Somehow I doubt it!
I used the new Spectrum DX3S which I quite like, along with some amazing JR 8915 (I think!) servos. Tyres today were LRP Kamikaze, but lots of different tyres worked on the grass. All in all, great fun day out. 😀
