Stories from the world of RC car racing

As we rush headlong into the end of year celebrations and holidays etc it’s time to start reflection on what we will be doing next year. In the context of this particular forum that means what will we be doing with that share of our lives that are dedicated to RC.
The maze of classes, scales, offroad and onroad that present themselves always makes choices difficult. There is a great tendency toward trying to dabble in everything and then doing nothing as well as you otherwise might.
I suppose at this stage I have to say I am committed to 1/10th scale for next year. Onroad will take the lions share of that but I also will do some Offroad. Electric power will be my main choice as it has been this year but there is a niggle there that says I should have a GP Onroad car in the cupboard for those Interclubs and other major events, and to race Big Mac now he’s gone gas.
But taking it one step at a time.
Offroad. When I race that will be a simple choice – it will be 4wd Super Stock (10.5 brushless ) with the CAT SX – no debate, that’s decided – my club races on the same weekend as Bayside which will prevent me doing much – maybe once a month but certainly some big events.
Onroad.
I currently race stock (17.5) but I want to race Super Stock (10.5) in 2009. This is the biggest class in NSW and Vic now and I think it could be here as well – imagine if all the experienced stock guys moved to Super Stock and left the stock class to the newer and less experienced drivers – under those circumstances there might even be more reason for guys to move out of 540 into stock. Also there has been no mod racing to speak of at Bayside or Logan so there might be a few of the newer mod drivers around who could be satisfied by a 10.5 class as well. Anyway I believe Bayside will let us run Super Stock if more than 5 guys turn up to race – I’m putting my hand up to go that way – any other takers ?

MINI. Yes I have a Mini and I have the brushless motor in it and I have the LIPO batteries for it. I will definitely run it at the Mid Week Mini Mania at the Tueday night Logan practice but will also run it as a second class at Bayside as well. I believe it’s a fun class and not sure that I would run it at any serious events.
My Mini back where it belongs – for the holidays at least.

GAS.
My mate has just bought himself a gas car with a TG engine so I guess will run it at the Interclubs and such – I would like to do that as well but I want to do it in a Pull Start RTR (AARCMCC eligible) car so I can do some other AARCMCC events as well – obviously I would like to be running a Schumacher – or something that Action R/C can sell and support, but you will have to wait and see what that might be – I’d like something for the Presidents Cup as my second class but not sure things will be in place by then. The potential for the Interclubs would be to run Gas Tourer Saturday and Stock or Mod on Sunday.

I know that there are no wheels and chassis under that Gas Car body yet – watch this space.
Major Events.
These are on my radar at the moment.
Summer nats – Illawarra Jan 2009.
Offroad Nats – Canberra Jan 2009
Presidents Shield – bayside Jan 08
Vic Offroad 1/8th Scale – Feb 09 – just to pit for Scott possibly.
Offroad EP State Titles – Townsville June Long Weekend
Onroad EP State Titles – Who knows where Sept 09.
3 Interclub Events in 2009 – will there even be an Interclub in 2009 – who knows ?
Tamworth ?
I AM DEFINITELY DOING AT LEAST ONE ROAD TRIP IN 2009.
My equipment for 2009 will line up something like this
Schumacher Mi3.5 Touring Car, Speed Passion 10.5 (or 17.5) and CORE 5000 lipo, Sorex tyres, East Cost bodies, KO servo, Speed Passion GT v1.1. Multi Coloured
Schumacher CAT SX 4wd Offroad buggy, Speed PAssion 10.5, CORE 5000 lipo, Proline Tyres Futaba Servo, Speed Passion LPF v1.1. Camel Yellow
Schumacher sponsored Mini, Hobby Wing powered, CORE 3250 Lipo, Hpi X patten tyres, Datsun Sunny body – Camel yellow.
The Serpent S400 is in reserve as a back up should I get the urge to run 2 EP Tourers on one day.
My clubs. I will stick with my Life Membership at Bayside and my Honary Life Membership at Chargers.

Heavy you will need more time if you want to
    attempt all the above.
I’m in for the On Road Stock at the Interclubs, Tamworth, Qlds champs,
Brushless Mini’s and Stock at LCRCCC.
and the Odd trip to Bayside and Sunny Coast.
I wish all a very happy Xmas
May Santa fill your pit bag with many goodies.

I`m in for 10.5 and nitro and f1 and the odd 10.5 4wd off road mate. Would like to wish all a very merry xmas and a happy new year.
P.S Ine other thing I am thinking about next year is the World Masters games in Sydney in Oct. Might hit the Velodrome and see if these old legs still have what it takes. 🙄

Ashley. I really have no idea what a rule set for that class might look like yet, but I’m pretty sure no-one would be objecting about that.
Grant, I’ll go the Master Games with you – there will be a class for exercise bikes won’t there ❓ 😆 😆 😆 😆

my need for speed had me and a couple of mates racing mod, but there is not enough of us to keep any regular club classes going on a regular basis.
I have noticed already the wear and tear being prety big when running 4.5turn for example.
    So 10.5turn would be great.
Ill order one within the next few weeks and have it ready for next season at bayside / meakin.
Anyone else who is for sure going to do it please post here so we can get a list happening. 🙂

The way I see it we can run 10.5 anytime by nominating mod if there are not enough to run 10.5 by itself. We will know who is running 10.5 and can have our own comp – even keep points if you want and ActionRC will put up a prize each season for teh class.
You need to realize though, that you will be out of step when the Interclubs come round and will either have to throw a 13.5, or 17.4 back in or go up to mod. That is presuming that the interclubs go with 13.5 and not 10.5 like the rest of Australia has. Time will tell I suppose.

I really like the 13.5, far more forgiving for those of us that aren’t perfect.

Yeah cool, we need to get it going and not just run in modified, as there is never enough mod guys at club meets anyway.
and guys that will take the 10.5 class a bit serious wont wont to be in with mod.

Im in for the 10.5 as well. Mod was a little rough on the car so 10.5 should find the sweet spot. Ive run an 8.5 before and that was great.

I’d be in for the 10.5 class for next year. But I would like to see the Interclubs remain as they are, mainly as so many people have invested in their 17.5’s, I reckon over a year most clubs would see a settling effect of those “better” drivers stepping up to 10.5 and the up and comers having more to race for in stock. Maybe to keep the seperation there could be a rule that you can only race 10.5 class if percieved to be good enough, maybe a set minimum amount of laps over a race etc. That way the good drivers have the choice, and most will step up I would say when they can afford the motor and the others have a very cheap step up to try and achieve over time on top of the normal stock achievments. Would give the up and comers in stock so much more to try and achieve and with the 10.5 guy’s dropping back at the interclubs, the stock class guy’s could really challenge themselves. Of course there would have to be stock and super stock at all the “big” events, to keep the seperation etc.
    Just my 2 cents.

Further to the above, if there were set standard laps to achieve the right to race in super stock, the racing would be so close and exciting as well.
and of course, Merry Christmas and Happy New year.

Aaron – no-one is suggesting any changes to the stock class at either club level or at Interclub level – of course the 17.5 will remain. Some of us are simply saying we would like to go a bit quicker on club days – the preference is 10.5.
As there is no mod class at club level any more – at least at Bayside – this might be a reasonable alternative.

We need at least 5 people wanting to run F1 for any of the tracks to become interested – either that or we put on a special event for them at some stage to try (again ) to get some broader interest.

I have sent a submission to the Bayside committee and it seems likely they will agree to the class as long as we have 5 or more. I expect we could start the race day after the Presidents Shield – think that’s the 8th Feb.

The 10.5 class is a great idea. It will give new people like myself a better chance as we will not have to pull over every 5 seconds to let one of you experianced guys pass.

keep a eye out for a F1 grand Prix up here in Toowoomba early next year. Might even talk with Heavy and try and make it a two round race maybe Bayside.

Tony I think that we need to start at about 5.5 so on your car go back to teh 89 that came with it and run a 29t pinion to start. As usual with brushless keep an eye on the temp and go from there. Do I detect that you are going to start practicing during the holidays ❓

My F1 is just sitting in a box waiting!!!!
The only thing I am worried about with the above posts is two many classes.F1..10.5…mini plus existing classes might be streching things a bit thin.
My problem is I have ALL these cars..what to do 🙄 🙄 🙄

Heavy, will look at purchasing a 10.5 in the new year. The only practice over the holidays will be with a 17.5. Will be more testing with shock settings. Have a great x-mas and will see you in the new year 😀

For me all of the above fits like a glove.
Bayside I race 1 car – so it doesn’t make any difference if it’s 10.5 or 17.5 still only one car. I think enough people will move to 10.5 that there is still one heat of stock left.
I have a Mini for midweek thrashing at Logan or Sat night at Logan or to run a second class at Bayside – still no problem.
Gas for me would be a 2 day meet thing or a special gas only meet. No problem.
Offroad is only – when I can
The only problem, and why I never mentioned it in my original post, is F1. I have no idea how or where we can fit in any regular F1 racing to the calendar as it exists at the moment – I have one but don’t see it getting any regular use for the moment – as I said maybe some “specials”.
