Stories from the world of RC car racing

This Sunday I’ll be racing Bayside (as usual ) the dilema is what to race. I’ve embarked on testing a cheaper version of the Mi3.5 called “RACE” and I think it’s a great car for 540 with stock capabilities as well – maybe even mild mod. I ran it in stock one meet so far and it worked really well – there are some mods I want to do to it but not before I try it as a box stock 540 racer.
That means really that even though I desperately want to race stock this week I really need to get a week of 540 out of the way so I can move on with some mods – and then there is a F1 in my pit box itching to be raced.
Oh well I’ll get there early and then make a decision – 540, stock, mod or F1

Someones just been telling me that the word is around that the Speed Passion 17.5 is junk and not up to the pace.
I was just looking at my results with mine at Bayside.
I have raced it 9 times, qualified in the A Final 9 times, finished in the top half of the A 5 times and the bottom half of the A 4 times including last once when the Serpent broke after 2 laps.
Considering that Bayside has assembled a pretty hot field in stock most of those meets and that I am not the best driver out there I don’t think that’s a bad record.
I don’t know if it’s the best 17.5 out there but if you take the trouble to find it’s sweet spot through gearing and timing I think you’ll find it’s not bad motor – if you are binning one let me know which bin – I won’t be too proud to go dig it out, i’ll need a new one sooner or later.

Allthough I make it a practice to tell everyone to make sure you keep notes I’ve never actually been guilty of doing it myself.
The pinion on the car at the moment from last fortnight is a 36 which makes for a roll out of 56.55 and was giving me lap times good enough for an A final possy at the Qld’s, but I’m sure I’ve been higher than that. If I run stock this weekend I am going to try a 35 for a roll out of 54.98.
    cheers

    I ran 55.67 at the Qld’s in my TC5.
Car definately seemed quick enough in the finals.

lower or higher ? and what prevented you from getting that rollout ?

I’ve been from 45mm right upto 60mm trying to get this motor to work properly. The heat prevents me from getting the right rollout, I’ve not thermalled it but it is getting bloody hot. Sweet spot fair enough, but there’s only so many combinations of spur/pinion you can get.
The transmission is not binding (its a schumacher after all) and the motor is only a few weeks old.

Also the rotor spins freely in the motor etc

With teh Schuie if you are running teh 70t spur you will need around a 35 or 36 pinion to get teh right spot. Try gearing till you get around 160 degrees F at the end of your 6 minute run.
What speedie are you using ?

The closest I’ve been to not overheating is 70/35 but it was still bloody hot
come to think of it i’m only using an XBR speedie so as far as brushless speedies go it’s probably not really cutting it

I suppose 160 degrees F could be described as “bloody hot”
I have no technical knowledge on the subject but I’ve seen plenty of people overheating all brands of motors trying to race, at the pace, with budget speed controls – even expensive first gen speed controls.

Another good day of racing at Bayside although a little short on numbers, particularly on the Nitro side and no modified electrics.
There was a full heat of 540 which was TQ and won by Chris Sturdy driving what was his Dads Qld Titles winning car of a few weeks ago. Gary has aquired a 3.5 Pro and moved into stock.
There were just 12 in stock today but plenty of quality drivers. I loaned my 3.5 RACE to an old man for the day and the best he could do was a 20lap 6m05 to qualify 7th – TQ for the B.
TQ for the A was Martin followed by Andrew (that’s a X-ray 1,2 ) followoed by Bob and Tony in the Mi3 Schumachers, Brad Hall and Jason Wakefield made up the 6 car A main. A very scrappy first lap between some of those guys left Martin with a very comfortable lead and a cruise to the win.
The battle resumes in 2 weeks.
