Recently I’ve been playing with a Speed Passion GT ESC and I must say it’s a fabulous bit of gear.
At roughly the same price or a bit less than the other top end speedies on the market it looks to me like pretty good value.
Has about the same size footprint as a LRP but the cap is probably a bit bigger. Once mounted it’s time for the basic set up. For the Futaba this means throttle EPA has to be set at 100% and the ABS has to be turned off. The basic set up includes a set of defaults for all the usual features like drag brake, initial brake, maximum, brake etc plus some acceleration features and adjustable voltage cut off for LIPO.
In practice the ESC is very smooth right from a crawl through the entire range and the drag brake feature is great to play with – even though the maximum brake is not very strong (on a 17.5 anyway). It seems to me that the motor is coming off a bit cooler than it was with the LRP which in turn was cooler than the GTB – yep – I’ve tried them all.
The programming is via the press button and flashing lights as usual or a hand held programming card – this card is super – very easy to use with all the major adjustment features printed on the card so you don’t have to go searching for the manual – very handy. So far I’m in the early days but made a couple of changes yesterday for the final and went out for a personal best so that can’t be a bad thing.
If you are in the market for a ESC have a look at the Speed Passion GT or if you are racing Offroad have a look at teh new low profile version – has a motor limit of 5.5 but that should be ok for all the stock offroad 4wd guys – still has all the usual features and a lower price tag.
cheers, Heavy
