Stories from the world of RC car racing

Now that ORRCA and the Interclub have approved the use of the 17.5 ROAR approved motors in stock what motors are going to be available and what motors are going to be the best.
The motors approved so far are
Novak 3417SS 17.5Pro
LRP VectorX11 Stock Spec 17.5T
Hacker E-40 17.5T
Losi Xcelorin 17.5 LOSAB9406
At the moment there is a Speed Passion 17.5 in at ROAR for testing but it is not yet approved.
Up to now it’s been difficult to obtain any of the motors except for the Novak which has been freely available. I am on back order for the LRP but don’t have one yet. There have been a few Hacker around.
Bob V and myself have both done significant numbers of races with the Novak and apart from the high rollouts required (around 56mmpr or 3.5 fdr – Bob has been higher than that ) there doesn’t seem to be many problems with that motor – it’s certainly a big improvement on the awful 13.5 bonded motor we have been using.
I’m thinking I will go with Speed Passion in the long term but until they are approved there is no real point in speculating about what they will be like, but their other stuff has been pretty good so they should be on the money. As all the brands are built to a pretty tight spec it’s unlikely there will be much difference one to the other.
I’m personally looking forward to trying the different brands and seeing how close we can go to a good brushed motor.

Actually I have a couple of the LRP 17.5 on the way now so if anyone wants one I may have a spare.

I don’t have any Core 5000 available at the moment, waiting for more to arrive for the orders already in.
As far as I am aware Tamworth is 13.5 bonded rotor only in stock. There is a Tamworth thread on rctech somewhere you can check on the entry form etc on there.

Our 17.5 Lrp’s will hopefully be here in the next few days or so, So we will have a report on them soon for you, But I’ll most likely run the speed passion as well but I’ll have the two to compare. There was a notable difference between the Orion 13.5 sintered and the LRP from what I could tell with the short run that I had with the Orion, and with Orion and speed passion being very similar motors hopefully that will be the same for the 17.5’s… Core Lipo’s, Brushless motors and MI3’s , good times ahead….

I was just playing with a Speed Passion ESC and, after years of using the default settings on my various ESC, because I couldn’t be bothered counting all the little light flashes and different colours and all that stuff, what a pleasure it is to plug in the little remote and tune away – fantastic easy to use, easy to understand – even a 60+ can do it.
Hope it works as good as it programs.

Ran an LRP 17.5 Stock Spec at Bayside on 20th and honestly didn’t feel any different to the Novak 17.5 so I think teh choice will come down to availability and brand preference between those two. Haven’t seen a Hacker or a Losi run yet.
I’m still waiting for teh Speed Passion to be legalised and I will get one immediately they are.

A year and a half out from this post and comments we now know that it’s not the motor that matters (although the Speed Passion V3 is a very good motor) but rather the speed control. Speed Controls that adjust timing, increase top end through “turbo” applications – they all call it something different, have made the spec classes something quite different and quite a lot faster.
Way back then when we banned the Quark from stock at the Interclubs we might have been on teh right track – if only we’d stuck to it.
