Stories from the world of RC car racing

Well, the time has come to and end when these two old stalwarts of RC racing in QLD have decided to move on (literally)…..
Scotty “Mr Reasonable” Guyatt and Peter “Grandpa” Dooley
If you want to see these guys off or just come for a laugh and giggle (at how poor their skills really are) 😉 come to Brendale this Friday night.  It will be a Touring car battle royale race meet!!!  Winner takes all! (bragging rights)  The field assembled will be:

  1. Scotty “Mr Reasonable” Guyatt
  2. Peter “Grandpa” Dooley (without his international walking stick pose yet)
  3. Johhny “Keepin’ it sideways” Perkins
  4. Anthony “Flea” Atack (word on the street he has been wanting to attack and dominate the drift scene with his beloved HB Cyclone)
  5. Andrew “Best Dad of the Year” Shapland (with his insanely fast Lipo powered beast)
  6. Scotty “Just drive it….it has wheels” Kirchner
  7. Grant “Big Mac” MacDonald (although he should be known as the “Lean Beef Burger” now)
  8. Leonard “Mr Out of Control Tools” Lai (according to the man who has carbon fibre handled tools! – Mr G.)

And the drawcard of the night will be Mr Jeffery “drift king” Hamon will be the race director and commentator for the evening.
So if you want to race, come out for a look, drop in and say hello/goodbye, give the old timers a hug and a kiss…….then make your way out to Brendale this Friday night!!!
The fun and games will begin around 7pm.

just so everyone knows – anyone can turn up and race. anyone turning up with a stock / 19t or mod motor will be catered for as well as pull start nitro.
i think they’re aiming to have nominations closing around 6:30pm racing to start at 7pm. if you are coming from the other side of town and are unsure if you’ll be able to make it intime for nominations, get in contact with john hansen and he’ll be able to take your nomination before hand.
there is easy acces to power and pit benches – just bring a light, a chair and you’re set.

I presume the order above is the starting order for every race? I’d be happy to alternate pole position with Peter – the rest of you can start down the back… 😉

We should also be entitled to a 2 lap head start and during every run both of us are allow to nominate a driver for a “stop-go” whilst the race is running… 🙂

Thanks Leonard, and everyone that came along. It was a great night, not too serious and a lot of fun. We should have more race meetings like this more often 🙂 🙂 .
Most memorable moment: “The Flea” coached into running the long Track… 🙂 🙂 🙂 Classic!!!!

Well the dust has settled on yet a another great gathering of mates. And the winner of the night was………… some mates having a laugh and enjoying themselves in a rleaxed atmoshpere!!!
Thank you to all that came out tonite and helped send off the two ‘old timers’. I am sure they had some fun before their semi, maybe, not sure retirement from RC racing in QLD.
I have heard that “Grandpa’s car” will live on……who will it be resurrected by??? Time will only tell….. (but I hear he is another semi professionally retired racer making a comeback)
So where do I start with the results from tonite….
    Race 1.
Scotty G started on pole with Petey D second, followed by JP, Leonard, Shaps, Grant Mac, Scotty K and finally the Flea starting in pitlane. Right from the get go, the Flea was cheating……he jumped the start, hacked his way through the field and got out to third place behind Scotty G and Petey D…..Scotty G was blocked by Petey D and consequently made an error from driving so slow behind Petey D. This allowed The Flea to sneak by into second place. Due to his unsportsman like behaviour and driving, the Flea incurred a stop go penalty and let through Leonard. Petey D held the lead from start to finish dominating the race 1, followed by Leonard, the Flea, JP, Shaps, and I am not sure of the rest……sorry. The highlight for race 1 was the 5 car peleton through the infield of the track!!! Amazing!!! Crazy!!! Unbelievable!!!
    Race 2.
Having started race 1 on pole, Scotty G was now relegated to second with Petey D taking pole. The rest of the field remained unchanged for the start. This was a race of attrition…….cars dropped like flies….in the end I think less than half the field finished. (a MASSIVE accident on the back straight – no-ones fault, just badluck, mechanical issues) So in the end, the winner was Leonard, Petey D, and JP. Since he has come back from being an international super star of RC racing…..Grandpa Doolster memory has not been the same……he forgot what track layout we were running and decided to go his own way!!!  Highlight of the race was The Flea believing all of us and running the long track layout, we all ran normal short track layout,  The Flea did a quick U-turn on the back sweeper and rejoining the race with the rest of us!!! ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS!!! (especially the whinging and moaning coming from him afterwards about it!!!) 😉
    Race 3.
After the recovering from the carnage of race 2, the entire field (except for Anthony “The Flea” Atack) made it back on the track. Everything started nicely yet again. And racing was ON!!! (thick and fast!!!) There were some very nice duels between many drivers….and I might add that Andrew Shapland had THE fastest and nicest sounding motor on the track!!!! (dentist drill material). Racing was close, clean and fast. It was great to be involved in….The results didn’t go as scripted…..with Scotty G having some minor technical issues and Petey D struggling for grip in the wrong parts of the track (namely BP corner, and whatever parts of the track he decided to use), allowing Leonard for the win from Shaps and then follwed by JP.
    Race 4.
Again had the two ‘old timers’ staring from P1 and P2, with the rest of the field as per previous races….racing was again clean, close and fast!!! It was good to watch. The Flea was back in action this race, but not with his beloved HB Cyclone, but a Trackside RC TC5 in Midnight Purple….The Dirty little Flea was tearing up the track after a tentative start. He came up to Petey D. and can Petey D, the international superstar block! His car was the width of the track! The Flea tried every which way to find a clean pass through. After sitting behind him for so long, The Flea got impatient and went for a BOLD move on the outside of the back straight!!! Unfortunately, Petey D, also moved to the outside of the back straight and the two came together. No damage was done to either car. (luckily – otherwise Anthony would have totalled 2 different cars in one night!!!) Race finished with a win from Anthony followed by JP then Shaps…..not sure of the rest (I know Scotty G had battery problems and Old Man Dooley had lap timing issues – laps were just too fast for Slyfox to count!!!).
Some interesting facts from the night:
Anthony has OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) – just move his neatly laid out tools and scatter them across the bench and see him go into a frenzy….especially his lucky body clips!!!
Scotty G who never works on cars……actually had to work on 2 cars tonite – due to some minor issues
Andrew Shapland has way too much HP!!! (literally like listening to a dentist drill going around the track)
Peter Dooley still has not got an international superstar driving pose.
Leonard Lai for having the LEAST amount of gizmos and gadgets out on the bench! And also doing the least amount of work all night!!! Thank goodness for LIPOS!!!
Seriously though, it was great to see all the guys come out tonite for some fun and laughs. Wish you all the best in your new endeavours and hopefully we’ll be able to get you back sometime to star in some celebrity races!!!

Leonard, you are the master of car setup. I was honoured to drive the your finely tuned weapon tonight. I also think your race report is completely accurate and you should be commended for your literary skills. It’s true, I did squeal like a girly-man when I accidentally took the long track in Race 2.
To the other drivers, i apologise for not always accepting the stop and go penalties gracefully, and respectfully ask that I be given 3 stop and go penalties in each qualifying heat and final at the interclub tommorow.
I’d also like to say that I consider myself extremely lucky to have even shared a race track with the two finest R/C racers ever to have graced a Brisbane race track (I speak of course of the talented and intelligent Peter D and Scott G). I still can’t believe I’ve been so lucky as to even win the occasional race against the two of them. Every night I go to bed thanking the great race director in the sky for my good fortune. This sunday night I will cry myself to sleep as I realise what a great personal loss I have suffered as they leave SEQ for the next few years.
I can actually feel the tears starting to well up right now…..

Grant….of course you were there!!! I just couldn’t remember where you finished up? After some unlucky starts.
I must say after having worked on your Corally – rest assured I will never own one unless they change those damn turnbuckles!!! What a pain!!! (or I could just get some normal ones for it in Midnight Purple).
But thanks for making the long trip down of Friday night – MASSIVE ASK! But I am sure it was worth it.
