Stories from the world of RC car racing

Over the last couple of years racing in stock has been very close. The combination of brushed stock and the Novak Bonded rotor has worked well to produce some good racing. The use of that particular brushless motor has allowed those without the motor building skills or without the lathe etc required to run near the sharp end of the field.

The good brushed guys haven’t complained because a very good brushed setup is just a smidgen quicker than the bonded novak. To introduce open 13.5 motors into the stock class would probably kill off brushed because they are quite a bit quicker. I would personally love to run a sintered rotor 13.5 but I see that it would ruin the close racing between brushed and brushless.

Leading into 2008 for the Interclub I had a lot of contact from racers asking that the situation in stock not be changed. Also that no major changes were needed in other classes as well.

There were a couple of scenarios that were possible and the one I favoured most was to split into two classes (1) stock brushed as per ORRCA and (2) open 13.5 brushless and I thought we could do away with 19t as it is not well supported.

As it turned out there was some people who wanted to keep 19t and fair enough but we still needed a place to trial the open 13.5 so we could get the answers – it was decided to allow them to run in with the 19t class where they should be competitive and that would give us some lap times under competition to compare against the regular stock class for future decisions.

As with all of these decisions not everyone’s requirements can be satisfied but at the end of the day what appears to suit most has to be the way.

There are no doubt many problems encountered with running brushed and brushless together in one class which is why both AARCMCC and ORRCA have refused to allow it as yet, neither have they allowed LIPO either as yet. I am pleased that in the Interclubs at least we are making an effort to get both of those things settled. I hope the 2008 Interclubs will be good events again and that after them we will have a lot more answers and hard data on which to base future decisions. I also know that other Interstate bodies are looking on with interest at what we are doing.

Happy New Year everyone – bring on the racing.

As usual QLD does the hard yards (5 cell in particular) and all the other States want to take the credit. Good to see we are at the leading edge and prepared to take the hobby in a forward direction

NSW have just announced the rules for their Interclub series for 2008.
In onroad there is no brushless motors at all in stock and the 13.5 motors are allowed in the 19t class only.
There are no LIPO allowed in any class.
I’m still satisfied that we are going to right way within the confines of keeping the majority happy.
I am however, a little belatedly, wondering if we should have looked at including the 17.5 in stock (with it’s sintered rotor it might prove to be a more reliable race motor than the bonded 13.5 we currently use.
I still think 2008 is a watershed year for brushless and LIPO and after some events we will have a much better idea where to head next.

If you are following this thread and not commenting that’s great. If you are interested in the subject take half an hour and read the ROAR debate on this issue – very interesting – looks like they will go 17.5 (stock) 13.5 and 10.5 with 19t and then mod as their 3 classes.
    The thread is here http://www.rctech.net/forum/showthread.php?t=198561

I am following it, just no comments until now 🙂 (as if people listen to me anyway, lol), I am just glad brushless is allowed, sintered would be better (wether it be what ever wind it ends up being in years to come), but even just bonded 13.5 is great for now!!!

    Although
If its true that a sintered novak 17.5pro motor is a bit slower than a 27t brushed, well thats a bit dumb as brushed may end up staying in for like ten years,
which is honestly dumb in my opinion, as why keep so old technology for ever when the new is so much better and easier & effecient for run time etc……..
It will also meen that you will need a comm lathe, dyno etc etc just to win and keep at the pointy end for more than one race meet.
Also it meens that yet agian we are forced to run only novak at this stage if we want to run brushless in stock 😦

When ROAR decide on something it won’t be a Novak exclusive – if ROAR go with 17.5 then all brands will make them because of the sheer volume of the US market. I’ll be getting a 17.5 to try, don’t think it will be any slower than a 13.5 bonded we run now, and without the problems of a bonded rotor.
In fairness there are two groups of people brushed and brushless – at the moment we are trying to keep both happy but in the end that might not be possible.
Personally I don’t have a problem with running Novak only – in 540 we run Johnson only and in stock brushed we almost by default run CO27 only – of course if other manufacturers were as pro-active to racing as Novak then we’d be able to choose from all brands which would be excellent – then of course I would run Speed Passion motors.

    HOT NEWS
ROAR (USA and Canada rules body) have just announced that 17.5 brushless / 27t brushed will be the new stock class. This will be the sintered rotor 17.5 and should quickly be available from all the motor manufacturers – some have them already. Apparently the 17.5 is about the same performance as the 13.5 bonded that we currently use but much more racer friendly being a sintered rotor. There is every intention of maintaining the brushed 27t / brushless 17.5 well into the future.
I haven’t seen the fill rule set yet but apparently they will specify the diameter of the rotor (probably max 12.5 ) which will make some of the current motors illegal for stock and super stock but again I’m sure the manufacturers will get onboard very quickly.
The Super Stock class will be 19T brushed /10.5 brushless (any brushless down to 10.5) for 2008 and then in 2009 it will change to open 13.5 brushless only- still called Super Stock.
LIPO will be allowed in any class that is a 6 cell class from 2008 (only approved packs and only Hard Case packs). Be interesting to see now what AARCMCC and ORRCA do about LIPO in Aust / Qld now.
