Stories from the world of RC car racing

This weekend sees the running of the 2007 EP On-Road Australian Championships at South Australia’s Littlehampton circuit. We’ll try and bring you news from trackside during practice and over the weekend as the event unfolds.
This years event sees four classes being run – and though entry numbers are slim, competition will certainly not be lacking.
12th Scale:  SA’s Rhys Marshall is a big chance in this class, together with Scott Giles.  Without knowing any of the other entrants, those would the two I think are most likely to be up front.
Stock Tourer:  This should be good. Look for Luc Botton, Michael Jones, Rhys Marshall and Damien Zarb to be up front with Ben Lawson and Jeff Primmer not far away. Best of luck also to Queenslander’s Brian Cook and Jeremy McAuley (both from Bundy).
19T Tourer: I’m not sure why this class is being run, but racing should still be interesting.  Luc Botton once again will be hard to stop and will have to deal with Scott Giles, Peter Ellis, Ben Maker and Mark Lawson.
Mod Tourer:  Just about everybody who matters will be there making this definitely the highlight of the weekend.  Simon Nicholson and Peter Jovanovic start as favourites, but watch out for Jake Zarb, Steve Jovanovic, Jesse Davis, Andrew Abbott and Andy Cooke as well.  Anthony Atack should make the A final, with Leonard Lai and Peter Dooley both also a chance of sneaking in. There is some serious talent we haven’t even named – Campbell, Vergunst,  Maker, Feigl, Khemlani, Parkinson etc etc et.  I think it will be Nicholson, Jovanovic, Jovanovic…

Practice is proceeding well – with one exception. Wednesday and Thursday the mod guys started experiencing problems with the control tyres failing. This followed similar experiences in Victoria last weekend with the same tyres (I think it’s a Take Off 32 premount being used).
After a meeting Thursday afternoon the decision was taken to change from the 32’s to a Take Off 27 as the tyre (for mod only – everyone else is ok on the 32’s). Later that afternoon one of the mod guys had a 27 fail – so tyre wear and tyre life is proving to be a big issue.
The expected names of Peter Jovanovic, Simon Nicholson and Jake Zarb are the quickest in modified so far.
Controlled practice is running this afternoon (I think) with qualifying starting tommorrow morning. Stay tuned for updates across the weekend (if I can get an internet connection in SA!).

Sorry about the lack of updates – didn’t quite work out with internet access as I had hoped.
Stock: won by Schumacher! (oh, and Luc Botton).
19T: Won by SA Justin Summerill driving Yokomo BD
12th: Won by Cristophe Esteven (not sure spelling or chassis)
Mod: Won by Simon Nicholson Corally RDX.
Tyre splitting continued all weekend for the mod guys. Track was awesome – but still too big – when will we see a nats on a proper 10th scale track? Fastest guys won. Everybody tired. Took 1200 photos. Enjoyed the trip.
    More news tommorrow.
