Stories from the world of RC car racing

Andrew Shapland in his debut drive in mod (at a reasonable competition level) took his brand new Mi3 to a 2 out of 3 finals win at the Logan Winter Cup  in Brisbane today.
Andrew was able to come from 4th qualifying position to overcome drivers such as Michael Sherman (Corally PHI ) and John Perkins (Corally PHI ), Drew Crawley, Martin Nichols and Tim Weier plus of course the rest of the talented mod field.
Andrew was over the moon with his win and is looking forward to competing at the new level that he has stepped up too.
Roll on the rest of the season, add in the regulars who were missing today, Anthony Peter, Scott and Leonard  and the two events at Sunny Coast are looking pretty fabulous as spectacles already. Add that Keith is looking at a possible renetry into mod and it looks even better – get to Sunny Coast for teh Interclub any way you can. (24 – 25 August )
The new Mi3 is certainly firmly on the list of cars to seriously consider if in the market for a new ride.

Having just spent a weekend floating around at home waiting for an overdue baby to arrive, I’m looking forward very much to getting back on track later in the year to join the modified fun. There is a lot to like about the results from the weekend:
Drew Crawley continues to grow in competitiveness. With the next two majors on home turf for him, I think we could see something special provided he keeps his head together.
Michael Sherman: Great to see Mick back on track and with the new Corally. Definitely one of Queensland’s most talented and underrated drivers – I hope we can see some more track time from him.
John Perkins: Excellent to see John back on the circuit and competitive after a bit of a break. Seems like the Phi suits him!
Andrew Shapland: No suprise that Andrew would make a good transition to modified, but still impressive to defeat the guys above, plus particularly Martin Nichols who is fast everywhere – but particularly at Logan. A great demonstration of (a) how good Andrew is; (b) how good the mi3 is; and (c) how to make a sensible and successful transition from stock to modified.  I’m sure Andrew will have some days where he learns some lessons about modified racing, but its an impressive beginning.
I hope the story of Keith re-entering mod turns out to be true. He’s an absolute talent, and great to race against. I hope Karl Yeung follows him not too far down the track (maybe after the Qld Titles Karl???).
What a seriously competitive modified field it would be with all those guys, plus Anthony, Leonard and Peter.  I love competing against fast guys – and this has the look of a really excellent competitive field.  Awesome!

Congrats to Shaps for his win yesterday in Mod. Well done mate, not only for the win, but stepping up to mod.
And Yes, I believe Karl Yeung is only steps away from making the transistion to mod. (probably before the QLD titles???)
With the biggest gossip around town……MacDaddy aka Keith Mackrill. Will he return to mod? What is the next chapter for him (and us)? And Keith, if you are reading this……..its not “you belong in stock” or “give it up” its “You belong in MOD”!!!
If all these guys race at this year’s QLD titles: (in no particular order)
    Anthony ‘The Flea’ Atack
    Scotty G
    Keith ‘MacDaddy’ or ‘Fish’ Mackrill
    Peter ‘Grandpa’ Dooley
    Mick Sherman
John ‘JP – getting it sideways’ Perkins
    Andrew ‘Shaps’ Shapland
    Drew Crawley
    Martin Nicolls
    Karl ‘Y-man’ Yeung
    Grant ‘BIG MAC’ MacDonald
Plus any of the normal ‘dirty mexicans’ that come up (Andrew Abbott, Andy Cooke, Simon ‘Smegal’ Feigl and Jay ‘fastest car on the straight’ Dixon to name a just a few)
And finally, the Reaper himself (me).
This is a receipe for a ‘uber fast’ titles!!! Look out!!!

Interesting statistic – in the A final of stock at the Interclub.
    1 – Kyosho
    1 – TOP
    1 – Tamiya
    2 – cyclone
    1 – TC5
    1 – XRay
    and
    3 – Mi3
Says a lot that 2 old guys and a young visitor can make teh A final with these new undeveloped cars

Interesting Statistic from the Interclub Stock class (still the biggest class )
    A final breakdown
1 each Kyosho, TOP, Tamiya, Assoc, Xray.
    2 each Cyclone
    3 each Mi3
All the Mi3’s in the class made the A final.
What this means is that the new kid on the block (Mi3) is immediately competitive even in the hands of a couple of old blokes and a young visitor.
Looks like we need a winning driver in stock.

Drew has uploaded video from the first modified A final to Youtube. Go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVSDr7B4ZKk
Also check Drew’s other YouTube videos – which include a mod final from a recent Sunshine Coast club day to give those of you (like me) yet to visit the club an idea of the track layout.

And the already crowded and competitive modified field continues to grow. Adrian Beggs will be back (now driving the X-Ray T2 007) and Aaron Fryer has announced his move to modified from the stock ranks (AE TC5 I believe).
Adrian has an unquestioned pedigree including past Qld Champ in the stock class, and plenty of experience. He will be quick. Aaron has been quick in stock recently at Logan events, and now faces the challenge of moving up to the fast class and coming to grips with other tracks.
What will be interesting is to watch the battle between the “newcomers” to modified, and to see who gets to grips with it the quickest. Mackrill of course, will be fine, and Shapland has been quick already. Now we see Beggs, Fryer, perhaps Karl Yeung also going at it.
Not only that, but new opportunities in Stock class – could we see some of the 540 “professionals” move up and fill the void?
