Earlier this month a small group of Queenslanders travelled down for the Victorian Titles which were held in Wodonga this year. That small group consisted of myself who flew down, Keith Mackrill who drove down and Chris Schoenfisch who saw a sign saying ‘R/C Racing ->’ while working in Wodonga and decided to drop in and check it out, much to our surprise.
The track in Wodonga is the perfect size track for electric touring cars and has a fast, technical layout marked out with wooden planks and plough discs which would punish you if you clipped them. ![]()
Despite heavy rain on Thursday the weather was perfect for the rest of the weekend – Cool and overcast.
In attendance were some of the quickest drivers in the country – Peter Jovanovic (Current national champion), Jake Zarb (Nationals 2nd Place), Steven Jovanovic (Nationals A-Main), Andrew Cooke (Nationals A-Main) to name a few.
Modified qualifying was dominated by Jake who took TQ from Peter, Andrew Cooke, Ryan Maker and Simon Feigl. After failing to put in a clean run in qualifying I would be starting off 6th place in the finals.
In stock Keith managed to TQ despite losing 3 of 6 rounds due to bad glitching problems – Later tracked back to a dud motor.
I guess one racer in particular had an even harder time during qualifying and took out his frustrations by reversing over his car.
After a good start in the first main I was hit from behind in the 3rd corner and had to retire from the race shortly after when the spool damaged in the incident finally gave way. Jake Zarb lead from start to finish crossing the line 2 seconds ahead of Peter with Andrew Cooke a further 3 secconds behind in 3rd place.
The second main was better – up into 3rd place before a couple of little mistakes while trying to keep up with Peter let Steve through dropping me back to 4th. Jake took out the second main again leading from start to finish just over 1 second ahead of Peter.
The start of the 3rd main was messy with one of the cars jumping the start and hitting Jake which several other cars (including myself) got caught up in. While trying to make back some positions I got caught up in a racing incident when Simon got loose coming onto the main straight and our cars touched sending them both sliding down the straight at full speed into the cement pit lane wall. The impact was heavy enough to break both our lower decks and my spool which forced me to retire. Peter managed to keep out of the mess at the start and lead from start to finish followed by his brother Steve and Darryl Khemlani who had a good race from 9th on the grid.
In stock Rhys Marshall proved to be Keith’s toughest competition winning the first main. Keith came back to win A-2 and A-3 which secured him the overall win.
In Mini despite wearing the Orange TQ Jersey all day Saturday Jaybo was knocked off of TQ by Ash Peeler who ended up winning the class on count back with both himself and Jay tied with a first and a second each.
All in all it was a good weekend.
