Stories from the world of RC car racing

Well there’s offroad racing at ipswich and I’d love to be there but have to work – boring.
Sunday there’s offroad racing at Logan and guess what – finally I am goin to run the 1/8th scale buggy that’s been sitting in my garage for months waiting to be fired up. I’m a bit nervous about it but anyway it’s happening.
Since our retirement from Onroad racing things rc wise have not really tapered off much.
The pits space now looks like this
1. Cen Matrix 1/8th GP buggy (not raced yet – scary)
2. Venom Sea Rescue helicopter (often crashed )
3. Losi Mini T (for the grandkids when they can get it off Scott)
4. Kyosho Laser ZX5 offroad EP buggy – ( fantastic at ipswich )
5. 2 old Associated B3 buggies (enough parts to keep one going )
6. The Schumacher EC – probably to be raced again at Tamworth.
7. 2 original Tamiya Hotshots now taking this space – probably salvage one really original model from the 2. Also a complete manual, – watch for pics.
8. As a bonus with the Hotshots the major parts of a original Frog – many more parts required to get this beauty back to spec and no manual.
9. Nearly forgot the shelf queen. Cen GTX EP with WRX body shell painted original 555 livery and autographed by Possum Borne.

Things are very hectic – every day I have to decide which one to play with.

Managed to get out to Ipswich on Saturday night by about 9. They were just starting the finals and luckily I just happened to have bought my ZX5, radio and 2 battery packs. Without a practice and having never run there at night before and severely lacking Offroad driving for the last 8 or so years I was a bit nervous.
I was in a mixed race with predominantly 4wd and I think 1 truck. Some were mod and some were stock. Managed to come 3rd in both races which I was very pleased with although no startling lap times or anything. the car jumps pretty well if you get set for them right and has a decent turn of speed for the short shutes, maybe a bit slow through the sweeper and the front straight. I was running a stock brushless motor.
Finally on Sunday I got to go to Logan for the GP Offroad and run the CEN Matrix that’s been hanging around my garage for months. Ding (the tune-master) waved his magic wand over the engine and it was running beautiflly – starting and idling and plenty of grunt – thanks mate.
I lost a lower king pin after 2 laps of the first race. We managed a locktighted screw to hold things together and I did two more races with that. i found it very hard to come to terms with the driving with all the jumps and the difficulty seeing the back straight etc and the bouncing around – not sure if the track was abnormally rough on Sunday or if that’s the way they always have it. Was a very hot day and I was struggling with the marshaling mainly because of the heat – decided to go home before the finals. I’m not sure GP offroad is for me but I will certainly be back for another go just to make sure – might wait till it cools off a bit.
