Stories from the world of RC car racing

After nearly 3 years of Indoor on-road and outdoor off-road racing, the track complex at Hobbystation hosted its last race meeting tonight. The doors of the Hobbystation shop close this weekend before re-opening at Sumner Park early in March.
Fittingly the nights racing was both fun and competitive, and had more than a few interesting moments…!
The storm that passed over Brisbane gave us one more taste of perhaps the most frustrating element of the venue – when it rains, the roof leaks! The result was the first two rounds of racing being run on a track dotted with rubbish bins and buckets catching the various drips falling from the roof. Some coped well with mid-track obstacles, others didn’t, but either way it certainly added some interest to the first couple of races!
540/Mini
Gary Sturdy dominated racing tonight, winning all four rounds comfortably in his very rapid Mission. Chris Sturdy was easily next fastest (also a Mission) ahead of the dueling mini’s of Brian and Stuart Milton. Peter Borman finished 5th from Dominic Fahey, Matthew Bontoft, Kurt E and Michael Dickinson after four action packed rounds. We hope that the young guys populating this class find another place to race and continue to develop.
Stock
The big guns of racing showed up tonight! Fittingly as the doors closed at HS, it was Anthony Atack taking one final win with pure pace and consistency. Anthony won two rounds and finally went 35 laps and got the best stock lap time down to 10.25 in the final round to demonstrate his mastery of the venue. I managed to sneak a couple of wins as well driving Dad’s Mi2-EC and using the Novak 13.5 brushless motor, while Peter Dooley was third with a mixed night of speed, and water splashes! Karl Yeung sat out one round, but was quick in the others to be fourth ahead of Kham Le and Kurt Bertrand. We certainly had lots of fun in stock tonight, and dodging the bins and buckets was quite a challenge!
Let us encourage you to stay tuned to this website as we hope to have an announcement soon about mid-week racing continuing in Brisbane. Hobbystation may be closing the doors on its race track, but racing will continue elsewhere in some form. Stay tuned!

It’s been an enjoyable period for me the last few months running the Wednesday night racing at Hobby Station.
The stock racing has been fantastic, maybe just because I’ve been in that class, but maybe just because the speed of stock now and the size of the track were just that all too rare blend of speed and size and challenge that comes along every so often. I remember some races with Disco and later with Brad Hall where I couldn’t walk off the drivers stand for the laughter and the sheer exhilaration of a great race. Some of those races are in my favourite memories of RC racing over more than 20 years.
It was a somewhat lower key final event than what I had been hoping for but I guess people had their reasons for staying away on the last night – not to worry what we lacked in quantity we sure made up in quality and good races were had – enjoyment was plentiful and smiles all round – hopefully that’s still the name of the game.
Thanks Leo and good luck with the new venture.
