Stories from the world of RC car racing

Well it’s done and dusted – the first major for the new competition year….

This was a competition that had it all. The experience, the talent, the raw ability, the sheer fluke. It was a competition between brushed and brushless, between power and precision, and between three competitors who with a little more time could do anything. When it came down to it, the main protagonists were Big Mac, Peter Dooley and myself and the final took place over 18 laps. The venue was just north of Toowoomba – on a new layout that Big Mac calls home. There were powerslides, overshoots and some incredible driving. This one had it all (ok, maybe not so much talent, but you get the idea).
Big Mac was the pre-event favourite being on home turf, but had his growing reputation seriously dented. Having been away from the game for a while, Dooley was a little rusty but showed enough flashes of brilliance to make sure he’ll be regarded as a force to be reckoned with next time around. I had a little beginners luck.
There were certainly some turning points. It was very tight early before a couple of slight mistakes from Big Mac, then a horror run from Guyatt allowed the consistent (!) Dooley back into the frame. At the half-way point there was nothing in it, and the lead continued to see-saw. With three to go Dooley fell back out of contention with repeated overshoots, and nearly at the death Big Mac made the fatal mistake that allowed me to sneak home ahead of Grant, with Dooley dumping across the line for a fine third.
It was tense, action packed and loads of fun. Word on the street is that factory rep (and part-time PE teacher) Leonard Lai will be the big name added to the field at the next outing. We’ll be sure to report all the details next time around (probably mid-late January I think…)

Had a great day, even though I’m still waiting on my protest to be upheld. Both Mac’ers and you were running oversized drivers…
