Stories from the world of RC car racing

Who knew. The Cadillac CTS-V is a real car – not just a Protoform bodyshell!
In honour of tonight’s Top Gear episode – we want to hear stories involving your mum and a car…..

My mum grew up in a car-obsessed family – dad and four sons.  I don’t know how she put up with rally cars in the garage, slot cars on the dining room table and the annual bathurst extravaganza that transformed our lounge room. Our family motto growing up was “if it’s got four wheels it’s meant to be raced”.  Now my dad taught me that saying and modelled it well. But one memory of my mum still stays with me – when I was a young fella I watched my mum compete in a ride-on-mower race.  Go mum!

My mother learned to drive in her mid 40’s and in a 1952 Ford Consul. 3 gears on the steering column and no synchromesh on low gear. She was the worlds best driver from the day she got her learners and the idots who made her go for her license test 5 times knew nothing about driving.
Our driveway was fairly steep and the Consul needed low gear which meant a double de-clutch half way up – we always knew Mum was home by the gearbox crunching as she attempted the change.
She would have been very good at RC racing because she always did her best driving remotely – from the back seat. And how lucky was it that she had her own brake pedal (imaginary) at every seat she sat in – saved us millions of times.
    But we loved her anyway.
