Another enjoyable night of racing at Hobbystation tonight with good company and some excellent racing.

In the combined 540/Mini class it was all Andrew Amies. Andrew cut his teeth racing at the Windsor indoor track in West Sydney and has only been back in Brisbane for a few weeks. Judging by his form tonight he’s going to take some stopping in 540. Behind Andrew was the gaggle (giggle?) of minis – lead tonight by Tony Fisher, then Steve Wenzell, Stuart Milton and Brian Milton. Peter Boorman was the 2nd placed 540 tourer runner. There was as usual loads of fun in the mini racing and it is set to get even louder when Heavy joins the action next fortnight!
Stock was competitive tonight with Adrian Beggs, Damian Barnier and Heavy going head to head. Adrian had the pace all night until his experimental tyre run in the last race saw him lack the pace to take it to Damian in his best run of the night. Adrian won comfortably from Damian, Heavy, Brian Fox and Wayne Pepper.
Mod saw the usual tight battles between Anthony and myself with Big Mac and Steve Wenzell joining the fun tonight. I managed to get over the line ahead of Anthony courtesy of some CEN tyres (!) with Big Mac third from Steve.
Tyres
HS is now an additive free zone, with the only allowance being cleaning tyres with pure “Simple Green” being acceptable. We’ve tried lots of combinations in recent weeks and so far are having the most success with the ubiquitous Sorex 36/C Medium combination. Big Mac also had some good runs with Takeoff 27’s (we think) tonight, and Anthony has tried lots of combinations. Grip in 540 and stock seems plentiful, and the mod guys are getting pretty well hooked up now as well.
Tonight for a “why not” we threw on some CEN treaded rubber tyres (from the CT4-R Nitro Tourer kit) and they worked suprisingly well. Not quite as nice to drive as the Sorex tyres, but the natural rubber gripped pretty good. Adrian threw them onto his car for a run in stock but by comparison found himself with a gentle understeer problem. A fun experiment, but the conclusion seems that Sorex perhaps build a slightly better tyre than CEN!
Setup
We’ve had to make a couple of minor setup changes to get the Mi2-EC gripped up and going well at HS. Thus far I’ve removed sway bars (both ends), shortened wheelbase and moved the weight forward over the front axle, added some toe-out on the front, and stood both front and rear shocks up as vertical as they’ll go.
The changes have resulted in a car that is pretty softly setup, turns in and puts power down pretty well and is still reasonably nice to drive. I’m still running the spool in the front of the car. Tyre-wise as above I’ve mostly been running a Sorex 36/C-Medium combo and finding it pretty good. These tyres have had about 20 runs on them now and are still working ok. Might try something a little newer next time out.
Come join us Wed 14th June for an enjoyable night of racing!
