There are a few guys going around who would have reasonable claim to be considered Australia’s best R/C driver. Simon Camilleri, Simon Nicholson, Ari Bakla and Matt Griffin are probably the standout contenders. I think over the weekend (at the Aus EP Offroad Nats) we’ve seen an effort that possibly defines the best “allround” electric R/C racer in the country…….This guy finished in the top 3 in the toughest class of all in electric offroad – 2wd modified. That was backed up with top finishes in both 4wd and Trucks. And all that comes on top of a top-3 finish at the 2005 Australian EP Touring Car champs. For my money that combination of results gives Maitland’s Chris Primmer fair claim to be the most accomplished allround EP driver in Australia at the moment.
And guess what – he’s racing in Brisbane next weekend. Chris will lineup in the Hobbystation Invitational with Andy Cooke, Chris Putnam (both Melbourne) against the pick of Queensland’s EP Tourer drivers – Anthony Atack, Keith Mackrill and Peter Dooley (plus a couple of ring-in’s). It’ll be a battle worth seeing (and don’t just come to watch – make sure you race in 540, Stock or Mod yourself.
That aside, picking the absolute best in the country is never an easy task. Do you pick the guy who utterly dominates one class? Or the guy who is strong across a number of disciplines? Does longevity count (ie time at the top?)? International results?
For what it’s worth, I’d name those four I listed above as the best four, and if pushed, I’d order them Nicholson, Camilleri, Bakla, Griffin. That’s my opinion…..what do you think?
