More testing

Those of you who follow this blog will know that I (and others) have been testing some brushless combo’s to see if there is an equivalent to the old grey can 540 motor that we currently use in the 540 class.
My testing has taken a couple of routes so far.
First I ran some meets with a regular 540 to get some idea of my pace to test against.
Then I ran a regular 21.5 V3 motor with a, shall we say a tuneable speedy – but not as tuneable as the latest generation of ESC – that proved to be too fast in my opinion as a replacement for 540 brushed.
Next I tested a untuneable ESC with a untimeable 21.5 motor – a cheap combination from Speed Passion – so far this seems to be about right as far as speed and driveability goes – in fact hard to tell the difference both in results and driveability. Some of the guys have taken this combo up as their regular power plant and are continuing the testing.
I will be testing another option now – same untimeable motor but with a open ESC with the no timing software loaded. We will test this for performance and also for ease of scrutineering – should be interesting.
Then I want to also test the same motor with some generation 1 ESC like the 07 LRP or the Novak GTB etc etc.
One of the guys is also testing a 25.5 motor with an open ESC – so far that combo looks a bit fast but it’s early days yet, time will tell. At Logan we plan to let testing run for the rest of the year and not rush a decision.
I am also keen to find and test some other brands of non adjustable ESC if there are any.

Crazy-Troy, thanks but not even in the name of science, testing or for the overall good of mankind would I be game to connect a battery to a GTB – that smoke is just waiting in there for me 😆 😆

Its ok Heavy, I released the smoke in the GTB today, I just couldnt stand to see it all caged up in that little Novak case, so i set it free.
It does put me in the market for a speedie…………

Ran one heat with the test 21.5 combo at Bayside today before I had to leave for another committment – again judging by the lap times the combo could run quite comfortably with teh 540 class without creating to many ripples. Just might put a few more people on the lead lap.

The testing continued at Logan last night. There were 3 people running the Speed Passion test combo that we are suggesting a s a possible addition to the 540 class.
Three of thos edrivers finished in teh top 4 – one in TQ but barely ahead of a standard 540 motor in 2nd. They finished that way in the final as well. Nothing surprising about that – if you look at the drivers concerned and their previous times in 540 you would have expected them to be in that top group. More evidence that these combos can run side by side with 540.
There was also an open 21.5 motor running last night and it was clearly faster on the track than a 540 – personally don’t think that is the way to go.
