This week the Guyatts have been strangely quiet, saddened – no, devastated by the loss of a 27year old nephew/cousin, James Nielsen. Alone and far from home James’ young life was snuffed out when the bus he was travelling in went off a mountain road in Peru just 8 minutes from journey’s end.
Certainly causes one to think about life, our tenuous hold on it – the temporary nature of it, and what’s important….. and what’s not.
A lovable, fun loving, environmentalist and adventurer, James packed an enormous amount into his 27 years and leaves a gaping hole in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
He will be sadly missed.

Sorry to hear this Heavy. Condolences to you and the entire family, a very sad story. I lost one of my best friends in a similiar tragedy, you just never know what can happen. Take care mate.

A very interesting “funeral” today – like James very different, very non-conformist, very casual – not a suit or tie in sight. Flaminko dancing, notes stuck and written on the coffin and woven through it all the very interesting story of James life. The value of accepting people at face value, hanging out, and talking, story telling. Seeing what lots of don’t, in every aspect of nature.
Later a bonfire and some fire stick dancing as the young people let their hair down in a celebration of James’ life.
Certainly for me – in my life – hanging out with friends will become more important than say racing is – the social aspect of being at the track with a bunch of mates and having some conversation etc takes on a whole new aspect for me now.
James is gone but not forgotten and his passing will have a profound affect on a lot of people – certainly on the 300 odd people that were there today.
And what a small world it really is – I met Tonnes mother there today Judy Atack is a friend of James mother – amazing isn’t it.LikeLike
