Racing F1

Wednesday night – Midweek Mania at Meakin every second Wednesday is – F1. June 10th and 24th and don’t forget Toowoomba on 14th June.
I’ll be doing some F1 racing – see below for an ongoing commentary on the Tech Racing F1 and other F1 vital matters.
Would be great to get F1 back to it’s former glory – remember when we used to race F1 at The Hills on the netball court every second Friday night 30 to 40 F1’s !
And even at Yeronga we used to get quite a turnout.
There must be a lot of Tamiya, Corally or HPI F1’s in cupboards around Brissy just waiting to be brought out, c’mon guys. Don’t be afraid to bring the Tamiya out – F1 is the only class where a Tamiya is competitive 😉 😉 😉

Finally got to race my F1 last night. Have to say I was very happy with it for a first hit out. I needed to do a couple of mods – really more related to a faulty build than a car or design issue.
Once I had done that it was fine – heaps of grip no sign of tweaking ( even after a massive hit when Tyson was stopped mid track and I was coming off teh back straight and hit him at full noise – a sickening noise ).
The only issue I have is to get the gearing right – the other guys had it all over me on the high speed sections – running a 17.5 and as we know from TC they need a high ratio. The issue here is the car runs a .4 module spur and I only have the one pinion that came with it. I will change over to 48 pitch then I have all the pinions.
Also for those that wonder about these things I was running a sensorless speedie and the power delivery to the SP 17.5 was very smooth and no sign of lag or cogging etc.
So far very happy with the car

One of the bug bears of racing a Tamiya F1 (and many of the other cheaper F1’s) is that every time you take the wheel off you have to reset the diff. Just ask Tyson – he was going off about it last night.
Well Tyson I have the answer for you – take a look at this wonder of modern engineering.
Scan down a bit to the article on the diff – what could be easier tighten a grub screw turn the wheel to loosen or tighten the diff and then loosen the grub screw and you are done – fantastic – and quite cheap seeing that it comes with a graphite axle as well – about $50 landed in Bris I reckon.
Last week I was relearning one of the old skills – gluing foams. Had to glue some tyres for my F1. Out with the contact cement, a covering on both the tyre (inside) and the rim (outside) and put them aside to dry. The trick to getting the tyre on the rim then without the contact sticking before you have everything lined up is a liberal dose of Turps. This keeps the whole mess slippery for a few minutes plenty of time to get everything lined up before the contact goes off.
If you want to see that happen give me a call and I’ll arrange a demo next time I’m gluing tyres.
