Stories from the world of RC car racing

Before you all jump in to tell me they do it at Brendale – I know that. I was thinking somewhere more central or even the South / West suburbs – somewhere where I don’t have to drive an hour each way.
If you haven’t seen 1/18th yet have a look ➡ here and scroll down to the TC car – they aren’t slow and boring.
I was thinking an indoor venue maybe some mid week action – anyone ❓

It could be a viable thing, but it will probably have to be one or the other for me. 😦

They look cool. Be good to run with Mini’s maybe as well?

I certainly wasn’t thinking about a track big enough to run Mini – they are allready well catered for. While on the subject of Mini I reckon the Wynnum Road end of the Bayside track with the mug handle would make a great short course Mini track.

    So many choices…
    Cars, Batteries, Motors, ESC’s 😯
    Lipo V’s NimH
    Brushed V’s Brushless
    Then there is the cars…
    LRP
    Xray
    Associated
    …maybe more

I’m interested, what are we looking at, Rubber tyres or foams?. Are there any guidelines to follow, motor types/winds etc?

I guess it will depend on what size the area is I can get and then what the floor surface is – need discussion but I was thinking 💡 rubbers and some kind of spec for the motor and gearing if possible so no matter what car brand you run we can all be on a similar pace.

    Sounds good…
A pinion/spur combo for each car brand with same/very similar FDR.
Same ESC/Motor combo or just motor
    Spec tyre combo

So after a little bit of looking around I have found some interesting bits of info…
    LRP S18 = Duratrax Vendetta(Avail @ Tower)
LRP/Vendetta/Associated are all around the same size.
HPI/Xray are the same size but alot smaller than the other 3.
LRP is hard to get and very $$ where it’s brother/father the Vendetta is relatively cheaper @ $179US. Also all parts and hop ups are available if needed.

LRP= vendetta – are you saying it’s the same car or just the same size.
Be good to be the same size as the Associated because there are a fair few of them around.
is it available as a car only and is there a LIPO that will fit and can we use a little brushless with maybe the little Emotion ESC. Be good to use a small spektrum receiver etc etc – so much to look at.

LRP is the Vendetta…Same car, same hop ups etc. As a roller only I haven’t found one. All seem to be RTR.
There is lipo’s to fit and brushless set ups as well. Foam and rubber tyres too.
    Should be exciting racing.

    more info…these are approximates
    Car-Duratrax Vendetta RTR $280AUD
    Lipo-Yeah Racing 1700 mAh 25C 7.4V for 1:18 plus EZ Run Brushless ESC/Motor 18T/Program Card combo $127
So I guess you could go racing for around $400 😉

If you have a look on http://www.oople.com they have a whole forum devoted to them, plus there are a few write-ups on the Uk series.
I think touring car rims fit too, so you can run your normal sorex tyres plus a couple of companies make minispike tyres – good for timber floors etc

Maybe we should look at Vendetta racing rather than open 1/18th ❓

A controlled car or cars might be an idea. I was surprised by the amount of variation between cars. Open 1/18th would be too hard I think.
Maybe the LRP, Vendetta and Associated as cars with a controlled brushless system or just a controlled brushed motor. Run the cars std except for useful hop ups more so for reliability like cvd’s etc.
If you stick to just one make it will be easier for controlled tyres too because they all have different wheel hexes and tyre widths.
I’d be up for ‘Detta racin’

All we need do is find a place to race now – indoor would be best and availability wednesday nights – will that be every wednesday night or every second wednesday night ❓
Seeing that there are guys from the coast interested in fairness we need to be looking over the Logan to Beenleigh way I suppose

What sort of surface are we looking at running on?
I’m guessing if it is indoor it would be either carpet or wooden floor or will we supply our own surface.
Wednesday nights would be good…weekly/fortnightly hmmm…whichever is OK.
Venue…anywhere as long as it’s not Toowoomba 😀

Personally I think you should run the AE cars, same cars as Trackside runs opens up inter track competitions, you can run at 2 different tracks, 3 if you add Melbourne & better parts turnover in oz for them

Personally I think you should run 18th scale buggies. Far more fun that little TC’s…..go search youtube for some video goodness

Somehow I don’t think we’ll be going to Melb to run 1/18th scale – nor Brendale for that matter – I can run a pretty good car for what I save on driving to Brendale each week. 😆
Darra sounds real good – 5 minutes from home in traffic.
What we need is a 1/18th scale so we can go to Darra and try the grip – often there is no grip when using a track after drifters

Cool…the Darra track looks good. Would be a good option if there is grip.
Not that keen on the Associated cars myself…too much of a buggy look to them. But if thats what will be run then I guess thats what I will get.
Personally I like the LRP/Duratrax cars.

Probably best to go with any 1/18 th Tourer and then do something with classes (box stock / spec etc ) when we see the numbers.

Been to the Darra track and met with Huge tonight. The track is a great place for drifting and there were a few guys there enjoying themselves – drifting.
I’m thinking it won’t suit our purposes because we want to race and I don’t think we can get the grip on the surface they have there. There is a drift meet on Tuesday night so I will take a car down with rubbers (and foams if I can find some) and see if I can get grip – if a 1/10th can get grip then a 1/18th should I suppose.
Maybe we should reconsider and go with buggys – they do have jumps there they can put out – in a strange sort of way I think maybe buggy tyres would get more grip than TC tyres.
Will post the result of this research after Tuesday.

The Duratrax buggy at Stormer is only $109 US RTR – throw away radio. but still cheap.
We could race buggies at the old Fairfield track(it’s a bit rough for TC ) bring a few bits of carpet to make the jumps….

Buggies to choose from would be (in no particular order):
    Losi mini-t
    AE18B/T
    Duratrax vandetta
    LRP
    XRAY 18T
My vote would be for Duratrax and AE and just specify spec motor (brushless).

ive skimmed over this and read some old rc mags i got here is my opinion.
make it a one manufacturer race as the cars do differ by a fair bit imo best value for money is the duratrax followed closely by the associated.
just my opinion, ive always wanted a vandetta but couldnt justify the money given the drain of touring car.
oh reason i like the vendetta is its standard electronics so recievers and servos we already have fit add a mamba system and u got insane speed for a decent price imo.
    just idea’s
